The historic City Oval, home to AFL Goldfields headquarters, is without dedicated female change facilities except for work to covert a cottage by the netball courts.
Ballarat MP Catherine King and Labor sport spokesman Don Farrell, who hails from Adelaide, pledged $500,000 to construction of female-friendly and accessible changerooms at City Oval in a visit to the grandstand on Tuesday afternoon.
City Oval key tenants include Ballarat Football Umpires Association and Redan Football Netball Club. The ground is also a key base for neighbour Pleasant Street Primary School's sport and this year's Ballarat Gift handicap running carnival.
Ms King said such facility upgrades were not cheap, particularly when it involved a heritage building such as City Oval's grandstand.
"It's a great old building, we love it, but it's not great for females who want to play sport," Ms King said.
Senator Farrell said the nationwide boom across women's sport was fantastic but a lot of ovals were playing catch-up.
City of Ballarat mayor Samantha McIntosh welcomed the promise and said the City would continue to lobby all sides and levels of government to ensure females across all sports and recreation had access to the right facilities.
Labor's move fits the City's ambitious game plan to make Ballarat one of Australia's most female-friendly sporting cities. The City successfully secured a $10 million community sports infrastructure low-interest loan via the state government last year to fast-track critical female-friendly facilities while keeping up with other council sporting priorities.
"Stats tell us, and we know from our work on the ground, (women and girls) need support," Cr McIntosh said. "...We've made a great deal of improvement in this space but we've got a lot more work to do."
