JUNIOR Zoe Hives has been matching racquets with the top women in Ballarat and Australian tennis.Hives yesterday won the Ballarat and District Open Women’s Championship, only days after defeating Australia’s number eight female tennis player at a national tournament. The 15-year-old from Kingston claimed a victory in straight sets over professional tennis player Sally Peers at the Australian Money Tournament at Melbourne Park, proving her ability to match it with the top women in tennis.Hives displayed excellent form to win the match in two sets 6-3 7-6.The Mount Clear College student then advanced to the quarter finals of the AMT where she lost to 23rd-ranked Azra Hadzic 6-3 6-7 6-4.Ballarat Regional Tennis Centre manager Rob Benoit said it was an amazing achievement.“It shows she’s mixing it up with the top women now,” he said.Back at home, Hives continued her success yesterday when she successfully defended her title as Ballarat and District Open Women’s Champion.Hives defeated Ashleigh Jolliffe, 17, in the final played at the Ballarat Regional Tennis Centre. The men’s open title was won by Ben Robinson, 16.Robinson came from 3-5 and two set points down in the first set of the final against James Millikan, to win the match 7-6 6-4 and claim his first open title.“Ben’s a current Ballarat 16-under champion and now he’s won his first Ballarat open title,” Benoit said.“He just plays really good, tight tennis.“He never gives in and he’s always tough to finish off.”
