The 47-year-old, whose suburb was deleted from the charge sheet, did not make an application for bail.

Defence lawyer Manny Brennan told the court custody officers needed to be aware it was Berg's first time in custody and he had an injured leg which required medical attention.

He said Berg had no mental health issues that needed to be addressed.

Wearing a black jumper and track pants with no socks, a bearded Berg played with his fingers during the brief administration hearing before magistrate Gregory Robinson.

Berg was remanded in custody until a committal mention on August 8. The hand-up brief must be served on solicitors and Berg by June 27.

EARLIER, 12.40PM: Police have charged a man following a series of alleged car fires in Soldiers Hill which have occurred over the past four months.

Ballarat Crime Investigation Unit detectives this morning arrested the 47-year-old man in Soldiers Hill just before 7am.

The Soldiers Hill man was charged with 10 counts of arson and is expected to appear before the Ballarat Magistrates' Court later today.

Acting Superintendent Dan Davison said he wanted to thank the local community for their patience and assistance during this investigation.

"Often these kinds of investigations can be quite complex however we want to reassure the community that police take these incidents very seriously," said Superintendent Davison.

"Understandably the community has been very concerned about these recent fires but we want to the Ballarat community to know police are committed to arresting and holding offenders to account."
