The Boer War South Africa Monument (1906) will soon be temporarily removed for assessment and repairs after an inspection showed signs of wear and tear.
This statue is made of beaten copper with a plastic core and requires frequent care under City of Ballarat's maintenance and conservation program for its public art collection.

It has been more than three decades since the Boer War monument was last removed for maintenance from its pride of place on lawns outside the town hall.
The statue was almost in the spotlight with another decorated horse in the city when Ballarat-trained Prince of Penzance was paraded in the Sturt Street gardens after his Melbourne Cup win in 2015. He was part of a huge street party, featuring Ballarat's Cup winning jockey Michelle Payne and strapper Stevie Payne.
