Speaking after the Highlanders' fourth-straight loss in the competition, the league president said the board would meet next week to discuss the concept.
While he expected coaches Rohan Brown and Heath Pyke to be given the opportunity to tackle the championships again in 2020, Comelli was giving no assurances about the CHFL remaining in the carnival in years to come.
"We'd certainly love to give them the opportunity to re-calibrate and listen to what they've got to say," he said.
"It would probably be unfair on them to pull the pin on it now. I'd be surprised if we didn't go again next year.
"We will certainly talk about it and see if we can come up with a solution to getting more players to participate and more clubs to embrace it.
"I would have thought that if after next year it hasn't improved markedly, I would say you could nearly kiss it goodbye. But I'm pretty confident we'll probably go again next year.
"I wouldn't guarantee thereafter if we don't have some sort of success."
Comelli called for a change in the AFL Victoria Community Championships as a whole, believing it would be better suited as an under-age competition which showcased the best young players in the state.
The CHFL returned to senior representative football in 2012 with victory over the Ellinbank and District league.
There has been losses in the past four years, with the comprehensive 41-point defeat by North Central at the weekend leaving the CHFL in 23rd spot on the overall rankings.
