But he'll always be welcome at one footy club regardless of what shape he's in.
That's the message from Redan Football Netball Club president Gary Goyne who said the club would one-day love to welcome him back.
"We'd love to have him back," he said.
"He's a Redan junior, a man of great integrity, and he's kept in contact with Redan, so it would be great to have him involved."
Grigg announced his retirement two weeks ago following a string of ongoing knee and hip issues which had kept him sidelined since the 2018 AFL season.
The 31-year-old played his junior footy with Redan, winning multiple best and fairest awards, before going on to play 214 AFL games with Richmond and Carlton.
Following the news of his retirement, Goyne said the club was immensely proud of everything Grigg had achieved.
"He was a 6'2 premiership ruckman which isn't bad," he said.
"But obviously you listen to the words of Damien Hardwick and his previous coaches - they all praised his integrity and his role within the club."
Goyne said having Grigg back would be a great boost for the club, particularly for the younger players who would have a chance to learn off a premiership hero.
He said Orren Stephenson had made a similar impact when he re-joined the club after his AFL career.
"The kids get a kick out of playing with him, and with the team we have at the moment, that is full of young kids, I think he gets a big kick out of playing with them as well," Goyne said.
Despite the prospect, Goyne said the club's main concern is that Grigg gets well and lives his life fit and without pain.
"I don't think it's a matter of us reaching out. It's more a matter of when the time is right for him or if the time is ever right," he said.
