The Ballarat Health Services 'when prostate cancer joins you in the bedroom' program helps men and couples navigate the strain that prostate cancer places on relationships.

Grampians prostate care nurse Gay Corbett said sex was a topic on which patients were constantly keen for help with but often unsure how to find advice.

She created the program, which runs once a month, having seen prostate cancer treatment "assault a man's perception of self and lead to depression, anxiety and stress."

One of the other three finalists is the HALF (Hope Assistance Local Tradies) program, which has been active in Ballarat and holds events for local tradies to raise awareness about the need to look after their mental health and wellbeing.

The award winner will be announced on Wednesday.

To mark Men's Health Week, the Australian Men's Health Forum released a report card highlighting a number of areas of concern including the fact that Victorian men die, on average, five years earlier than women.

According to the report, four times more men under 65 die from heart disease than women the same age, one in three men die of cancer compared to one in four women, three in four suicides are men, 93 per cent of workplace fatalities are men, and three quarters of road fatalities are male.

"The solution to these problems is not to stop working to improve the lives of women and girls, but to increase our efforts to tackle the issues facing men and boys," said AMHF chief executive Glen Poole.

"This means investing more time, money and resources into helping health services become more male-friendly and focused on the needs of men and boys."
