Victoria Police said the man, from NSW who was travelling with a group of people, became unwell and collapsed about 3.45pm at MacKenzie Falls.
Emergency services were called to the scene.
Stawell State Emergency Service unit deputy controller Brodie Stewart said volunteers assisted ambulance personnel.
"Once we arrived we were notified the person was deceased and it would be a recovery operation," he said.
Police will prepare a report for the coroner and the death is not being treated as suspicious.
