He has moved to 21 votes after seven rounds.
Magin, who won the award in 2016, had another big performance in the Lions' come-from-behind win over Lake Wendouree on Saturday.
He has returned to best form after a quiet patch by his standards last season and been instrumental in a solid start by Sunbury.
He is two votes ahead of Redan ruckman Orren Stephenson, who missed Redan's loss to Melton with a groin injury.
Daniel Burton (Bacchus Marsh) is next on 16 votes.
