A new u-turn lane at the intersection of Sturt and Elliott streets is designed to make it easier for drivers to turn safely and to reduce rear-end crash risk. The intersection is close to both Ballarat Clarendon College and St Patrick's College.
Works in the high-traffic area are expected to take about four weeks to complete, particularly in the next fortnight during school holidays to minimise disruptions.
The project is part of the state government's $4.8 million plan for safety upgrades to Sturt Street's western end.
This follows the opening stage of works along the front of Ballarat High School, which were completed in May.
The median at Vale Street was closed so drivers could only turn left in to either Vale or Sturt streets.
The right turning land from Sturt Street into the service road outside Ballarat High was also extended to reduce congestion, particularly during school drop-off and pick-up times.
Road and footpath surfaces outside the school were also improved.
Traffic lights at the city end of Loreto College are also part of future upgrades as are new lanes at the Arch of Victory roundabout.
