Six extra VLocity carriages will now be stabled in Ballarat, after upgrades to the carriage yard were completed this week.
This will mean the carriages will be in position for the beginning of service in the morning peak, instead of having to be moved from the Ballarat East Depot.
The capacity of the yard has been increased to 18 carriages, with trains to begin using it from Monday, when regular services are scheduled to resume.
During the two-week blitz, 130 metres of rail near Rowsley and rail joints near Ingliston were replaced, and drains, culverts, and bridges were inspected, cleaned and repaired along the entire line.
The work is part of the Ballarat Line Upgrade project, which will also eventually include rebuilt stations with second platforms at Wendouree, Ballan, and Bacchus Marsh.
There will also be passing loops built between Warrenheip and Ballan, and the northern loop, which passes through Gordon, will be closed.
Closer to Melbourne, construction for a new train station at Cobblebank is under way, and the Rockbank station is being rebuilt.
The Public Transport Users Association's Ben Lever said the blitz was an encouraging sign work was going well.
"It's really a good thing when they take advantage of the shutdowns to do maintenance and smaller projects," he said, though he added he was surprised more stabling was being installed at Ballarat station.
"It's most efficient and smooth for everyone if the trains are stabled close to where they originate - nowadays it's more at Wendouree, that would make more sense," he said.
"Having them at Ballarat rather than Ballarat East will be more efficient in the short term, but in the long term, having more stabling at Wendouree would make sense."
