The newest A-League club announced its intentions to the Ballarat community on Thursday evening at a fan forum held in the city. They also expressed a strong desire to play up to three A-league competition games at Mars Stadium, however the arrangement is yet to be confirmed.
"We are in discussions with council and the FFA with the intent of playing two to three games in Ballarat," Western United chief executive officer Maurice Bisetto said.
"We still need to cement and understand the arrangement between the three parties, but we're very confident that we'll be playing games in Ballarat this year."
The club is aiming to play the pre-season match on September 21 in what would be one of the club's final hit-outs before the upcoming A-League season.
Western United director of football Steve Horvat said the seed for the idea had been planted by Ballarat City head coach James Robinson. He said Morshead Park embodied the type of stadium that Western United hoped to one day achieve.
"We are building a football only stadium where we will be the only sport that occupies it, and it's the same thing here," he said.
"We would use the opportunity to engage with the community and hopefully it all comes together over the next few days."
Horvat said the club still needed to get confirmation from another A-League team to make the trip to Ballarat.
He said he was hopeful they would know which club it would be in the coming days.
Robinson said a pre-season match and subsequent competition games would be an exciting time for the city.
"It's fantastic for the whole of the community. I think Western United have made their intent towards the region, and it's the reality behind the vision that's coming to fruition."
