It is interesting to note the debate over possible uses for the old Redan Cattle Yards site.
Not long ago, there was a functional rail line between Gillies Street and the Redan cattle yards and sidings.
With no prospect of future rail traffic, much of the line was dismantled south of the revamped Ballarat Golf Club.
Now in 2019 as the population of Ballarat expands rapidly, especially in the west, it is possible to see that if there had not been a lapse in long term planning, the Redan cattle yards railway alignment between Gillies Street and LaTrobe Streets could have been reserved for future transport needs and a major transport hub which could be a functional part of Ballarat's future growth.
The City of Ballarat and successive state governments somehow have a unique history of failing to plan long term for the future development of Ballarat in a way that truly benefits.
It seems short term tunnel vision is the way to go.
Everyone appears to win, except the population of Ballarat.
