The rampaging Burra jumped two positions as they ran over the top of Darley by 39 points at Marty Busch Reserve on Saturday.
Sebastopol now heads a quartet one game behind top side East Point, which easily accounted for Lake Wendouree by 53 points.
The Burra started the day one game behind the leading trio of East Point, Darley and Redan.
Getting over Darley was reward enough for another fine performance, but overtaking Redan was an added bonus as the Lions were convincingly beaten by North Ballarat City.
Redan's 28-point loss sent it tumbling two spots to fifth to be also behind Sunbury.
North Ballarat's late surge continued, with its fourth win on end lifting it two seventh - still a game outside the top six, but now ahead of Bacchus Marsh.
The Cobras' finals hopes took a major blow with a three-point upset loss to Ballarat.
This leaves Bacchus Marsh two wins outside the top six and facing a struggle to make the cut with five rounds remaining.
For Ballarat, it was its second win on end and took it up one position to ninth.
Sebastopol can now claim to be a genuine premiership contender after consecutive wins over Redan, Melton and Darley.
While it was yet another day for celebrations in the Burra camp, Darley coach Heath Scotland's reaction to the defeat was immediate with him taking his players behind closed door post-match.
Not even the arrival of former Richmond player Shaun Grigg was enough to inspire Redan, which was out-run and out-smarted by the Shane Skontra-coached North Ballarat.
Grigg, who booted a goal with his first kick, made a steady contribution playing in attack and on-ball, but looked to be short of a run and finished the match on interchange.
While North Ballarat is on a hot streak, Redan is looking a little shaky with three defeats in its past four rounds. Its only win in that period came with a goal after the final siren.
