The Lakers rode a hot start to beat the Kangaroos 42-37 at Wendouree Reserve on Saturday.
Coming off a disappointing loss to North Ballarat last week, Lake Wendouree coach Katie Williams knew an adjustment was in order to overcome last year's grand finalists.
"We knew we had to play more consistent for four quarters compared to last week," she said.
"We had a really good training session on Thursday and mixed up the game plan. Everyone knew what their role was."
Intensity was the mantra for the Lakers whose defensive activity stifled East's ball movement through centre court.
Taking a seven point lead into half time, the Kangaroos hit back in the third to trail by only five goals heading into the final term. The came no closer.
The Lakers fended off the late charge the take the match by five goals.
"We managed to delay how quickly the ball was going into their goal shooters," Williams said.
"The fact we could delay it meant it gave our defenders a chance to pick off their passes."
Williams heaped praise on defenders Kirsty Walsh, Kara Hart, Emma Gill and Kate Drew, who created a number of turnovers in the back half. Lake Wendouree shooting tandem Mel Allen and Ella Bibby were also superb.
"Mel was demanding the ball and being the target we needed, and Ella set her up and made that space for her to operate," Williams said.
The win keeps East Point fourth on the BFNL table, and only one spot behind East Point which have fallen to third following the loss.

Round 14 of the Central Highlands Netball League A-grade competition has been highlighted by some major movement towards the bottom of the finals picture.
Waubra, who were holding onto the eighth finals spot going into the weekend have been pushed down to ninth following a deflating 21-goal loss to third-places Springbank.
The Tigers stifled the Roos through the mid-court and overwhelmed Waubra with their size and experience in attack.
Gordon was also shifted down the ladder after the Eagles couldn't match the ladder-leading Lakies at home.
The loss puts Gordon in a precarious position as they hold a one game advantage over Waubra and Dunnstown but possess the fifth-worst scoring percentage in the competition.
The biggest beneficiary of the table movement was Bungaree, who jumped from ninth to seventh following its 18-goal win over Skipton at home. Still with a bye in hand, the Demons could climb as high as sixth by the end of the home-and-away season.
Elsewhere top-four sides Hepburn and Ballan both secured comfortable wins over Creswick and Beaufort respectively, while the Bombers kept its hopes of a top four finish alive with an easy win over Daylesford.
Dunnstown continued it's push towards a possible finals appearance going with a 40-goal win over Clunes at home and Newlyn moved two spots up the ladder after a close win over Carngham-Lionton.
