The SES reported seven call outs overnight, with six trees reported to be down. They also assisted police in Smythes Creek at the scene of a fatal collision involving a pedestrian.
The large tree on Blackberry Lane fell over on Tuesday afternoon, with SES unable to move the trunk and branches off the road. The eucalyptus tree is estimated to be hundreds of years old.
Mt Buninyong resident Jane said others that live on the road were using fire access tracks to try and get to their homes last night.
"I've never seen a tree that big just be uprooted ... the SES were trying to look at the tree while there was these great big hail stones," she said.
While Ballarat has only recorded three millimetres of rain since 12pm Tuesday, wind gusts of almost 60km/h blew through parts of the city at around 8.10pm last night.
Temperatures are expected to hit a top of 12 degrees on Wednesday.
