For the second year, Haymes Paint was scored by more than 3,000 customers as Australia's top paint brand, according to comparison website Canstar Blue.

The Ballarat family-owned business doesn't sell to corporate hardware stores and will soon be the only major paint manufacturer in the country to have Australian owners.

At a celebration event on Wednesday, Haymes' sales director Matthew Haymes said receiving a five-star rating from the public was "just remarkable".

"It's come from people that actually use our paint, so I think that's the beauty of it," he said. "It's someone's asset that you're actually impacting on."

Haymes Paint was founded in Ballarat in 1935. While all manufacturing and the head office remains in the city, the company now boasts more than 230 employees across the country.

Mr Haymes said the business wasn't eyeing any major expansions, but was focused on more sustainable workforce growth of 10 to 15 people each year.

"Our growth is sort of capped at about 15 per cent, because as a family, it's hard to grow. We're not corporate, it costs a lot of money to grow," he said.

"So we do it in a staged way, but we've been around 84 year, we'll be around for hopefully a lot longer."

CEO Rod Walton said the achievement was a reflection of the high standards set across the business, from research and development to the distribution floor. The paint products are sold in more than 300 independent retailer stores.

The Haymes siblings - Belinda and husband Rod, Matthew and Tim - were in their 30s when they became an integral part of the business, when parents David and Jenny decided to retire. They are the third generation to steer the long-running company, founded by their grandfather Henry and run by his brothers after his 1955 death.

"For the first three or four years, we probably fought to find our spots, we fought to find our relevance in it," he said. "And it was probably in the mid-2000s that we all realised it wasn't about us, it was about the team and the families that are committed to us that they had a viable future."

While the family-first ethos of the company has been a big part of why it has remained in Ballarat, Mr Haymes said the dramatic weather variation which Ballarat is infamous for provides perfect condition for paint-testing.

"It gets pretty cold in the winter, and then pretty warm in the summer, contrary to popular belief!" he said.
