It's almost half a century since I was confronted for the first time by what is now called domestic violence, although we didn't have a name for it then. At a meeting of Canberra Women's Liberation, one of our members proposed that we ask the local authorities for a house to serve as a sanctuary for women and children fleeing from the terror they endured in their homes.
