Clifton, who was on the brink of selection to make his AFL debut for the Giants, suffered the injury while playing for the reserves on Saturday.
It is believed he has broken his scaphoid bone and has been placed on the GWS official injury list.
Clifton, 24, was named as the first emergency for the clubs AFL debut against Syndey last week and was likely to be named to play in the coming weeks.
