The petition, which on Friday had already received more than 100 signatures, is calling on the City of Ballarat to install speed humps throughout the popular thoroughfare and comes as the city reveals the disturbing numbers of animals killed or injured by cars.

Petitioner Jo Rye said she was concerned about wildlife along the lake and around the city.

"Speeding drivers are taking a toll on the black swans and other waterbirds," Ms Rye said in the petition.

"As the population of Ballarat grows, we expect this problem may also grow.

"I am preparing a submission to Ballarat Council, to present in late August.

"We intend to ask for speed humps, or even rumble strips, to slow down speeding drivers. At present there are just two pedestrian crossings in Wendouree Parade. By comparison, Gregory Street, with minimal bird life, has around 10 speed humps."

A spokesperson for the council said it was constantly monitoring traffic movement around Lake Wendouree to improve access for visitors and motorists and to protect the lake's wildlife population.

"Warning signs and reduced traffic speeds around Lake Wendouree have raised awareness of swans crossing the road at key locations, particularly near the Botanical Gardens and the Loreto College precinct," the spokesperson said.

Terry Demeo, Director of Infrastructure and Environment Terry Demeo said there had been only "very few reported incidents" in the past three years.

"Council is also working with Regional Roads Victoria for special traffic treatments to enhance the connectivity between Lake Wendouree and Victoria Park, which are likely to further reduce the risks to the city's moving swan population," Mr Demeo said.

"Council welcomes any feedback from the community in relation to these issues."
