The station was completely rebuilt with longer platforms and a pedestrian overpass, with lifts, as well as a 350-space car park.
A Regional Rail Revival press release notes it is the first station to be completed as part of the $500 million Ballarat Line Upgrade project.
Wendouree, Ballan, and Bacchus Marsh are also being upgraded with new platforms and overpasses, and a new station will be built at Cobblebank.
The project also includes new passing loops to speed up train services.
It's anticipated construction will be complete by the end of 2019, before a commissioning phase.
