Mr Powell aims to highlight the organisation's work with young families and veterans in his role as Ballarat ambassador for Legacy Week, a fundraising drive.
He said Legacy had a decorated and well-known history for aiding widows from soliders in WWI and WWII but its modern work was equally important and perhaps less well-known.
The fact Legacy is also for young veterans and providing practical support for families is important to be aware about too.

"A lot of the work done currently is preventative work financially and socially for veterans after service," Mr Powell said.
"Financially, like helping some of the costs to send a veteran's children to school. Socially, like psych support which can reduce some of the burdens on our vets and prevent the follow-on effects."
Ballarat Legacy launched its annual Legacy Week campaign on Thursday.
Mr Powell, who is also a member of Buninyong Returned and Services League, will speak with school and community groups in his Legacy ambassador role. He said it was an honour to help carry the mission of a group almost 100 years old that was based on a group of soliders in WWI who promised to look after the wives and children of their fallen mates.
"The cause is something everyone gets," Mr Powell said.
"The fact Legacy is also for young veterans and providing practical support for families is important to be aware about too."
With the help dedicated volunteers, known as Legatees, Legacy currently supports more than 629 widows, children and veterans in the region, including Ballarat, Bacchus Marsh, Daylesford,Maryborough, St Arnaud and Clunes.
Legacy badges are on sale across the region with Legacy Week to start on Sunday.
Ballarat Legacy also hosted a reflection service at the Statue of the Grieving Mother last Sunday to honour all Australian women who carry the burden of anxiety in war, campaigns and peace-keeping operations.
