The fullback featured in all three of Australia's 2018 World Cup matches, before injury struck as he lost his spot to Sydney FC's Rhyan Grant this year.

Risdon was not included in Graham Arnold's squad for next week's opening World Cup qualifier against Kuwait and said while he hadn't heard from the Socceroos boss, he was focused on finding form and fitness.

"I'm just looking to get back playing and doing well here and then if it comes about that I can get back into the national team squad, that'd be great," Risdon told AAP.

"It's something I'm going to work towards and just doing all the right things here will help me do that."

Risdon suffered a groin injury during the Asian Cup, then had an injury-affected A-League season with Western Sydney Wanderers.

But after signing with Western United, the 27-year-old has built fitness, featuring in the club's pre-season friendly matches.

"There's obviously a few games coming up with the World Cup qualifiers so the main thing for me is just to get fit and get back playing," Risdon said.

"I haven't played a competitive game since early February but getting fit, back playing, get some games under my belt and then hopefully doing well and then you never know what could happen."

Western United have played three friendly matches so far and Risdon - who has played at Perth Glory and Western Sydney - said he'd enjoyed his time at the new club.

"It's obviously very different but the club's done a lot in such a short space of time and the direction the club's heading in is very exciting and I'm just happy to be a part of it from the start," he said.

"There's good people in the club, we've got a great squad, (the) coaching staff's awesome.

"It's got a really good feel amongst the club and everyone's just really looking forward to that first game of the season."
