Six crews from Ballarat City Fire Brigade, Lucas and Ballarat CFA were called to the fire just after 5am.
An occupant had self-evacuated by the time crews arrived on scene and was treated by paramedics. They were not transported to hospital.
The fire was brought under control about 15 minutes later, though crews remained on scene until after 7am to ensure it was fully extinguished.
The fire completely gutted the brown brick home in Frances Crescent, with ash blanketing a car in the front yard and the smell of smoke noticeable from the street.
Police were on scene early in the morning awaiting arson investigators to arrive.
Investigations as to the cause are ongoing, with investigators from Energy Safe Victoria to attend later today to investigate if the fire was caused by a faulty gas heater.
