The champion stretched his jumps winning sequence to nine - equalling the record of Lots of Life set in 1969.
Black and Bent (Steve Pateman) held off a late charge from the Darren Weir-trained Gotta Take Care, which Smerdon had declared pre-race as the main danger.
This gives Smerdon and Black and Bent two $100,000 Galleywood Hurdles, 3200m, in three years.
They combined to win in 2010.
Smerdon has made a clean sweep of the jumps events on the first two days of the carnival, having landed a treble yesterday.
Smerdon has had five wins all up - also saluting with Whitten Oval in a three-year-old 0-68 handicap, 1400m, today.
Weir has had four wins for the carnival.
He followed up a treble yesterday with Cosmic Demon, which scored from Smerdon's Flanker in a maiden, 1000m.
Cosmic Demon was first-up since November.
In 10 previous starts, the four-year-old had had seven seconds and a third.
Ballarat stables had seven wins at Warrnambool yesterday.
As well as trebles to Weir and the Caulfield/Ballarat Aquanita Racing operation of Smerdon, Andrew Payne also had a win.
