During Danny Frawley's funeral on Wednesday we heard one of the most important messages after an extremely testing 10-day period.

The poignant message came from leading mental health advocate Wayne Schwass, as he remembered and paid tribute to his good mate, Spud.

Frawley's funeral was a touching affair where his life was celebrated, but his mental health issues were never far from the spotlight.

We heard tales of Spud in all facets of life, from his days at Bungaree, St Kilda, Richmond, as a media personality and a great family man.

Throughout the service there was a clear intent for spirits to remain high. However, when Schwass took to the microphone, it came with a message that would burn in the memory of everybody in the room and everybody watching the stream.

There was barely a dry eye inside Kingston City Town Hall as he stood in front of thousands and delivered a message from his heart - a message that should never go unheard by anybody, especially males.

"We live in a world that expects us to be stoic, sensitive and show our sensitivities," he said.

"The male mantra: Harden up, soak it up, man up, has been handed down from generation to generation like it's some sort of badge of honour that teaches us from a very early age that to be a man - a real man - you need to be tough.

"Even in (Frawley's) darkest days in recent weeks, he was still championing his message, that no man should ever walk alone. That's courage. That's strength, That's selflessness from the ultimate team man, and teammate."

It's unfortunate that it takes such a tragedy for a message like Schwass' to be heard on such a large platform, but that only heightens its importance.
