The clock was running though.

At 29 years of age, it was a now or never moment.

So with all this running through his mind at the end of last year, he made the call to give it a go with reigning premier East Point.

The Roos were potentially going to be the hardest side to break into, but as a long-time friend of East Point premiership player Clay Bilney he never considered anywhere else.

Mahar said he had considered joining East Point in 2018 after returning from three years in Western Australia, but for family reasons chose to go back to his home club of Bungaree in the Central Highlands league.

He won the CHFL best and fairest and this made him all the more determined to try his luck in the BFL.

Wearing a premiership medal on Saturday night, Mahar had no doubt he could not have made a better move.

"It's been great. I've loved every moment of it," he said.

"They're a good bunch of kids," he said with a particular reference to the youthfulness of the list and that he was one of the elder statesmen at the Eastern Oval.

"It's been fun."

Mahar said the move to a higher competition had meant many new roles for him.

He said he had had some "fix it" roles and done what he could as an inside midfielder to held his younger teammates.

Mahar was fortunate to captain Bungaree to a premiership in 2014.

He said this flag had a much different feeling though.

"It's really satisfying, much more challenging. It's quicker and a lot harder.

"I've proved a point with what I've been able to achieve. I've proved I am good enough to play at this level."

Mahar said he would be remaining at East Point next season.

Mahar was one of six players in the side who were not part of last year's East Point historic first premiership.

He joined Jesse Baird and Billy Jones as first-year recruits, and Lucas Dahlenburg, Mitch Tuddenham and Drew Murphy who missed to injuries.

Mahar also continues an impressive flow of recruits from the CHFL for East Point.

Jacob Brown and Cam Lovig arrived on the scene last season, and Jesse Baird this year.

BILLY Jones was East Point's main injury concern out of the grand final win over Sebastopol.

He suffered a knee injury - possibly a strained medial ligament - and finished the match on intrechange.

Sebastopol's Ben Hutt was also in the wars.

He injured a shoulder early and after attempting to play on was not sighted on-field after half-time.
