Australians looking for a working holiday in the UK will be pleased to know that the Tier 5 Youth Mobility Scheme visa is the perfect option.

In fact, it used to be called the "working holiday visa". There are a few eligibility requirements you need to satisfy to be granted the Tier 5 visa. One of them is being on a list of only eight countries - luckily, Australia is on that list.

Tier 5 visa requirements

Firstly, check you're on the list of eligible countries. These are:

  • Australia
  • Canada
  • Japan
  • Monaco
  • New Zealand
  • Hong Kong
  • Taiwan
  • Republic of Korea

There's also an age requirement. You'll need to be between the ages of 18 and 30.

You will also need to have saved the equivalent of GBP 1,890. This is to ensure you have enough money to support yourself getting settled in the UK.

Finally, ensure you've got a valid passport with a blank page available for your visa.

Check if you're ineligible

There are a few things that disqualify you from the Tier 5 visa other than not meeting the requirements. You won't be able to apply if you have:

  • Children living with you
  • Children you're responsible for financially
  • Previously received a UK Tier 5 Youth Mobility Scheme or "working holiday" visa

What you can do with the Tier 5 visa

The UK Youth Mobility Scheme lets you live and work in the UK for two years. You're welcome to leave and re-enter the UK on the visa whenever you like; you don't need to stay in the country for the whole duration.

Many young Australians use their stay to study, work and experience UK life. If you enjoy your stay, there are further visa opportunities available, like the Tier 2 work visa.

Working in the UK

The Tier 5 visa gives you the freedom to work for a UK employer during your stay. You're even allowed to work for yourself or set up your own company.

If you're a freelancer, this could be a great opportunity, and it will take the stress out of finding a job if you've already got freelance work lined up.

If you need to find a UK job, it can be quite daunting if you don't have a lot of money for an extended salary-free stay. The best way to prepare is to ensure your CV is up to date and formatted correctly and to contact a UK-based recruiter who can help with your search. There are also plenty of job search websites available for you to start your search from your home country.

Many visa holders have landed in the UK and found a job in their field, or even in another profession. Job hunting while in the country is always going to be easier than finding one remotely.

Extending your stay

You can only apply for the Tier 5 Youth Mobility visa once in your life. If you love the UK and want to continue staying after your two years are up, you'll have to apply for an alternative visa.

A Tier 2 visa will allow you to live and work in the UK, but you'll need to have a job offer and sponsorship from a UK-based employer. You can use your time in the UK to increase your chances of finding an employer willing to sponsor you.

You can't switch to a Tier 2 visa from the youth mobility visa - you'll have to leave the UK and apply from your home country.

Another option is to apply for an Ancestry visa. For this visa you'll have to prove you have a UK-born grandparent. If your application is successful, you can live and work in the UK and eventually apply for citizenship. This route can be complex; speaking to a migration and citizenship expert can give your application the greatest chance of success.

Enjoy the UK

The UK is a place full of rich culture and amazing experiences. The Tier 5 Youth Mobility Scheme is one of the easiest ways for young Australians to immerse themselves in the country and absorb all it has to offer. So, what are you waiting for? Apply for a Tier 5 visa today.
