That is why it is often a pleasure to break some good news which reveals what kind of a community Ballarat really is.
The history of Blake Driden has been a long and touching story for all of Ballarat, as he and his family struggle with his rare and debilitating blood cancer. Support for them over the years through his school, football clubs and the wider community has been continuous and unstinting.
Then when the best and worst collide on our front page, the very car the family use to transport young Blake and make hospital visits was stolen and burnt out several months ago.
The Courier brought this to the public's attention. But not content to let this end with despair or anger, the community has mobilised again to help the Driden family with multiple spontaneous offers of help and the laudatory generosity of Ballarat Toyota.
The infinitely varied patchwork of life reflected in our pages, sometimes casts up some bright and inspiring colours.
