It left the family feeling numb and wondering what else could possibly go wrong in life, and created a new set of challenges for a family already grappling with the logistics of regular visits and stays at the Royal Children's Hospital, work and family life.

But on Saturday the uncertainty and some of the family's burden was relieved when Ballarat Toyota gave the family a new Toyota Kluger for a year.

Blake Dridan, 12, has been battling severe aplastic anaemia, a cancer in which the body fails to produce enough blood cells, for almost three years and after having a bone marrow transplant in 2017 has now developed graft versus host disease, a common complication.

In recent months his health has deteriorated and he has been unable to go to school because of dizzy spells and headaches which makes him at risk of falls at school. He also tires easily, struggling to walk more than 100m before needing to sit down.

"Things flare up and ongoing it's hard to manage because a lot of the treatments conflict each other," said Blake's dad Luke.

"You just have to watch closely for things because when they turn, they do quickly."

Blake spent almost a year at the Royal Children's Hospital before and after his transplant, and had a two week stay last month because of complications.

It was on mum Michelle's birthday in July that the family discovered their ute had been taken from their Invermay Park home.

"Dad went out to buy mum some flowers and that's when he found it was gone," said Georgia, 14.

"It's just silly," Mr Dridan said. "Everything rolls up on you. We have not had a great run for a few years and this really just topped it off.

"It's a numbing feeling really, just one more thing then you wonder what else."

The family hope that receiving the shiny new wheels, which come with free servicing, will be a turning point.

"We need the two cars. Most people need two but for us in particular, it's hard with just one. We've got three trips to the Royal Children's Hospital this week alone."

Ballarat Toyota's offer of the car is the latest in a long line of support for the family, who say without friends, family and the community they don't know where they'd be.

Blake said he was "pretty excited" about the car and the difference it would make to the family.

Football media personalities, the Richmond Football Club, the Australian Cricket Team and other sporting superstars are among many who have offered support to the Dridans.

People from across Ballarat and the state have helped the family out in the past, from Blake's primary school classmates to the Richmond and St Kilda football clubs.

He's also been a part of the annual Maddie's Match AFL games, raising awareness for bone marrow disorders - even swapping out his beloved Tigers guernsey for a Saints one in June this year

The keys to the car were handed over during Craig Hutchison and Liam Pickering's Off the Bench radio show on 1116 SEN radio, with the two also running a fundraiser for the family.
