Dr Drill won Sunday's listed Cranbourne Cup and is likely to be sent towards the $500,000 Ballarat Cup on November 23.
"We thought he might be a good Ballarat Cup horse," Maher told racing.com after the weekend's triumph.
"I had to go to this race (Cranbourne Cup) because it just looked the right race for him, but we normally stretch him a little bit more between runs.

Meanwhile, the good form continued for Ballarat trainer Mitch Freedman on Saturday when he won the Manangatang Cup for a second year running with Not To Know.
Ridden by Jess Eaton, the horse backed up from a last placing at Flemington to take out the time-honoured feature.
It was Not To Know's first success since winning the 2018 Manangatang Cup.
The nine-year-old galloper has now won six races and more than $110,000 in prizemoney.
Freedman has trained seven winners since September 27 and now has 13 for the season.
