If you were up early this morning, battling the fog and the cold, you might be wondering what we're talking about, but we promise the day will turn out spectacular as the weather heats up throughout the morning.

The city is going for a top of 23 degrees today with barely a zephyr of breeze and not a cloud to be seen.

And the next two days promise to be even better with 26 predicated for Wednesday and possibly as high as 29 on Thursday, before winds return and a nasty dose of reality hits by the end of the week.

While the temperature is finally warming up, we're unlikely to set any October records, with the hottest temperature ever recorded for the month being 33 degrees back in 2006.

As glorious as the next three days promise to be, it won't last. We're expecting wind and showers on Friday before dropping back to as low as 12 degrees on Saturday, although the cold snap shouldn't last too long as we head back to 21 by Monday.

October to date has been slightly cooler than average, but despite a few decent downpours in the past week, we're still on track for a dry month.

So far, the city has averaged 16.5 degrees with the highest temperature recorded at just 23.

Only 23.4mm in rainfall has been recorded in the gauge, well down on the usual 66.5mm. Also slightly unusual for the month, winds have mostly remained quite light which has given firefighters a great opportunity to prepare for the upcoming fire season.

While some parts of the state, particularly areas in drought affected east Gippsland, are already on fire restrictions, our wet winter and cool spring to date means we are unlikely to go onto restrictions ourselves until near the end of next month.
