Ballarat City Caravans is celebrating 10 years of business, a decade of helping people hit the road for their great escape - and what a ride it has been.
Working in the caravan industry was a lifelong ambition for the family behind Ballarat City Caravans. The Sebastopol business initially started as a hobby, with Troy Cuthbertson, his wife Michelle and Troy's parents, Col and Janine Taylor fixing older vans before selling them.
When they opened Ballarat City Caravans in 2009, the family also operated four Subway franchises in Ballarat. However with a passion for travelling and sharing their experiences with customers in order to help them plan their own adventure, they sold their last foot long sandwich in 2011.
Coming from a busy customer service business, the family appreciate the importance of good customer relationships and have built their company based on this. Since opening they have expanded the premises to include a five-bay service and repair centre onsite, which was built in 2011.
Ballarat City Caravans is also an accredited insurance repair agent. As part of this accreditation, the service team undergoes a refresher course every two years to ensure they are consistently across everything that needs to be done to keep families safe when travelling on the road. Col and Janine now fall into this category themselves, still involved in the business but also enjoying their own opportunity for further travel.
So what has changed to caravans during the past 10 years? Plenty, according to Troy. As more and more families are investing in caravans and touring around the country, Troy says they are also looking for more space and luxury items. Caravans are bigger than they were 10 years ago, accommodating creature comforts such as ensuites, storage, bunk beds and bigger dining areas.
More and more people are also customising their caravans based on their individual wants and needs, Troy noting that the business has introduced the first RV with an electric lift-up bed installed, which is now available in most models.
