When I was a kid, we had a separate garbage bin for food scraps.
Then in-sink garbage disposers came along.
Groceries were packed into heavy duty paper bags.
No worries about plastics.
The bags were used for household trash.
No plastic bin liners.
Milk and soft drink bottles were glass, and we paid deposits and they were washed and reused.
There wasn't much in the way of a plastic problem back then.
Today the six bin solution just seems a bit radical.
Stephen Downey, Golden Point.
I would be happy to recycle using more bins and containers.
I would strongly object to paying more for collection though as the City of Ballarat already has very high rates when compared to other regions.
Marilyn Gale, Ballarat.
Stop hesitating to fix the waste and recycling problems we have created for ourselves!
I've always believed that recycling begins with first base - separating and putting rubbish into separate bins for correct recycling is the way to go.
Not the cocktail of mixed rubbish which is the present method.
The longer the delay to change, there will be no way out of an even bigger mess.
Kayren Browne, Drouin.
Washing recyclables to get rid of food contamination?
This wastes water during water restrictions.
Six bins per residence?
Five townhouses times six bins equals thirty bins on a property.
That's three times the number of bins in the community which would equate to three times the number of bin pickup services.
More cost for the community equals higher rates, not to mention three times the air pollution from the trucks.
All for what?
Cam Macdonald, Lucas.
