The Friends of Lake Wendouree Natural Environment (FoLWNE) do not support further lighting around the foreshore of Lake Wendouree.
Thousands locally share this view.
Wildlife, including insects worldwide are in decline.
Australia has one of the highest extinction rates in the world.
The Federal Government has recently provided draft guidelines to protect migratory birds with regard to light pollution.
The Pygmy Possum has recently had a reprieve after Zoos Victoria appealed for the community to turn off lights so the Bogong Moth could reach Mt Hotham.
The wonderful wealth of wildlife around the Lake is already under stress and needs to be protected.
There are many in the community who see other more pressing needs rather than additional lighting on a track already bathed in sufficient ambient light.
The existing highly reflective light coloured gravel paths are highly visible and excellently maintained by the Council.
There is one section of asphalt near the POW memorial which could be replaced soon with gravel as tree roots are beginning to lift one small section adjacent to a tree.
The original council survey was not comprehensive enough and didn't extend to all users.
The survey did not reflect the wider community using the Lake with 6% of the population of the city of Ballarat supporting further lighting.
All users asked by FoLWNE if they are happy with the current status quo, have been so far.
Good Government knows when to reverse a decision, despite the lateness of the hour.
