Accused of two counts of common law assault and one charge each of aggravated burglary, making a threat to kill, and false imprisonment against his former partner, the jury of six men and six women, in front of Judge Sarah Dawes, found him guilty of all charges except one common law assault.

That particular charge related to an allegation he strangled his former partner on the night of the break-in, in June 2017.

He was found guilty of assaulting his partner on June 2, 2017, by slinging her to the ground and striking her.

He then left the house on June 6, going home to Bairnsdale.

After receiving a text message from his partner on June 7, he returned to Ballarat, broke a window at the victim's house, and prevented her from leaving, while making a threat to kill her.

He was arrested the following morning after the victim texted her mother with his phone, who then phoned police.

The trial revolved around the credibility of the victim's evidence, with DNA evidence disputed, while the defence witnesses included two of Hayward's cousins who said they had heard the victim saying she regretted "set(ting) him up" after the incidents.

However, the prosecution said the victim's evidence had a "ring of truth" about it, and showed a woman attempting to set boundaries with her ex-partner while still allowing him to see their children.

The prosecution also noted Hayward had admitted in a police interview to being violent towards his partner in the past.

The jury took about three hours to deliberate on the decision.

Hayward will now be remanded until a plea hearing at the County Court in Melbourne on December 6.
