Since its inception in 1979, more than 250,000 children have connected with history and taken part in the costume school, dressing in period costume and role playing school life as it was on the Ballarat goldfields.
To celebrate its ruby anniversary this week, 10 school-goers have been invited back to reenact their classroom experiences from decades past.
For at least one past attendee, the costume school was life changing. "It sparked in my 10-year-old self a love of seeing the past brought to life, and motivated me to study history. I finished my honours year in history at the University of Melbourne in July and am hoping to begin a PHD in history at Oxford next year, all because I got to put on a bonnet and learn cursive writing back in 2006," said Ruby Ekkel who will be part of the reenactment on Sunday.
The costumed schools represent five real schools that existed on the goldfields around Ballarat.
