Brent McLeod, 27 has moved to the CHFL club after leaving Apollo Bay, which he has coached for the past two seasons.
Ballan coach Tristan Batten said a random phone call had led to the Blues securing the highly rated McLeod.
Batten said the Geelong-based McLeod had no previous links with Ballan.
He said he made a chance call to the the 2019 Jack Mahoney Medallist when he heard the inside midfielder was looking for a new football home.

Batten, who is coachiong Ballan for a second year, said it was a great outcome.
He said McLeod had much to offer as a player and leader.
As well as his midfield deeds, McLeod is also a noted goalkicker - getting 41 in 2018 and 49 this year.
McLeod midway through last season committed to coach Apollo Bay again in 2020, but stepped away at the end of the season. He led the Hawks to a preliminary final.
His credentials go much further than the CDFL.
McLeod is also highly regarded in the Geelong District league, where he grew up playing with Thomson, where has had three stints.
He played with Tuggeranong near Canberra in 2013 when he was named in the NEAFL team of the year as well as being the competition's rising star award winner, was in the 2014 SANFL team of the year while with South Adelaide and won the 2016 GDFL best and fairest when playing with Thomson.
He was assistant coach at Ocean Grove in 2017 before moving to Apollo Bay.
McLeod's stand-out year with South Adelaide featured 21 senior appearances for 25 goals.
