The blast of Antarctic air is expected to moderate as the day goes on, but it is expected to remain quite cool for the rest of the week.
Ballarat's coldest ever day was recorded on December 5, 2013, maxing out at 10.9 degrees
EARLIER: BALLARAT could set an all time weather record today and it's not one the city would like to have.
If we fail to reach 11 degrees today - which is a very real possibility - December 2, 2019 will officially be our coldest December day ever.
At 10am, the temperature sat on a brisk 6.9 degrees, with a feels like temperature of minus 1.6 degrees which is due to the wind chill. The last time we were above 10 degrees was at 7.30pm last night.
Without doubt, the city will fail to reach a feels like temperature of 10 degrees all day, but we'll be keeping an eye on the record books throughout the day as we close in 11 degrees.
For the record, the coldest ever December day happened on December 5, 2013 when we topped out at just 10.9 degrees.
At the weekend, we missed out on the coldest ever start to December when we briefly maxed out at 15 degrees on Sunday.
Fortunately the weather is expected to slowly improve during the week, but will remain cool. We'll need to wait until at least Sunday to hit 20 degrees.
