A MAN has been arrested following an alleged hit and run in Canadian earlier this afternoon.

After a collision on Elsworth St East, Canadian, about 12.15pm a 39-year-old Ballarat man allegedly fled from the scene.
The victims pursued the man in their damaged vehicle and he eventually came to a stop on Main Road, near the Mercure Hotel.
Members of the public held the man until police arrived and he was subsequently arrested.

Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Brett Robinson of Ballarat DRU told The Courier that the man was known to police and wanted in previous matters.
A quantity of cash and drugs were allegedly found in his possession.
While the car was not stolen, he was allegedly displaying false number plates.
Firefighters attended the scene and the City of Ballarat has been called to pour sand to cover oil on the road.
