The red carpet was rolled out as students, families, staff and friends gathered in the school's new theatre to watch a dozen student films created over the past three years.
VCE media studies teacher Troy Begg said the past three years had seen a big uptake in students studying media and eyeing off a future creative career in film, television animation, or production.
"We've had some incredible results in the past couple of years in terms of the films that students are producing, so we decided to try to celebrate some of the student films as part of a film festival," Mr Begg said.
"The artistic community at Phoenix isn't often celebrated the way science and sports are, so this is what we are doing."
Senior students have taken to the media studies course and it's now being rolled out in to the middle school.
"We want to give creative types, the ones who want to do something along the lines of animation, film making or photography, an additional pathway of study," Mr Begg said.
Several of the year 12 class of 2019 have already secured places at Melbourne's JMC Academy for creative industries, including graduate Kellie Monger.
Ms Monger said it was exciting to be able to showcase the trailer she had created for her horror film Unkown to others on Thursday night.
"The mood is supposed to send chills down your spine. There is a lot of suspense," she said.
Ms Monger said the film night was a special experience to end her time at Phoenix.
"I am glad I got to be around people just like me - people who get excited about films," she said.
"I am grateful I had this opportunity to study media at school. It is cool we get to experience it and we are very lucky to have access to the materials we used."
Local businesses Showbiz Cinema and Griffin Burger are sponsoring the film festival, with Showbiz lending their red carpet for arrivals and Griffin Burger offering prizes for the winning film.
At the conclusion of the 12 short films the audience will vote for their favourite.
