Patrick Nealon, 38, appeared in Downing Centre District Court on Friday where a determination on his punishment was adjourned by Judge Jennie Girdham until March 6.
The Irish ex-tradie, who kissed a baby brought to him as he waited in the dock, has been in custody since his bail was revoked last month.
Prior to learning his fate, he is now to be examined by a forensic psychologist via audio-visual link in early 2020.
Nealon was found guilty in November of dangerous driving after drunkenly hitting and killing 22-year-old Nicole Lewanski on the Princes Highway at Wolli Creek, in the city's south, in December 2016.
He recorded a blood alcohol reading of 0.169 - more than three times the legal limit - after the crash.
Nealon lost control of his car and slammed into a pedestrian island where Ms Lewanski was standing, throwing the student into the air and killing her.
