A stellar partnership from Wendouree openers Cole Roscholler and Sam Miller steered the Red Caps to a nine-wicket victory over Buninyong in the Ballarat Cricket Association. The partnership, which totaled over 100 runs, formed the backbone of Wendouree's second innings score or 1-148 in its twenty20 clash on Saturday. Roscholler, 69, and Miller, 63, proved too much for Buninyong, which finished with a first innings score of 5-147. Buninyong looked threatening to start its innings at 0-40 after five overs. But it struggled to contend with the Red Caps spin-bowling attack, which slowed the Bunnies run-rate. Wendouree first-gamer Aaron Johns, who formed part of the bowling attack, praised the efforts of his side. "They got off to a good start and our spinners really pegged them down," he said. "Our batters were on fire too. They've been in really good form all year and were really good." A couple of dropped catches prevented what could have been a fairytale debut for Johns, who got the senior call-up from selectors on Thursday night. After finishing his first game with figures of 0-33, Johns said his selection came on the back of some solid form in second grade. "I've been trying to build some solid form and trying to bowl some solid overs, and it was good to be rewarded," he said. The selection came as a surprise for Johns, who said he's more suited to two-day cricket. He said he was confident he performed well enough to crack the side next week. "I've just got to work on a bit more consistency in twenty20 matches because people are trying to hit you over the fence," he said. Joel Cadman led the way for the run-setters with a score of 30 off 26 deliveries. He was backed up by Bradley Barnes with 23. North Ballarat captain Leigh Lorenzen finished with figures of 3-27, in what was a dark day for the club. Elsewhere Brown Hill batsman Imesh Udayanga and Viraj Pushpakumara formed an effective partnership to help their side beat Napoleon-Sebastopol by six wickets.
