In a statement to families on Tuesday, the college board said Ms Potter had advised the board of her intended resignation earlier this year.
Highly respected in the Ballarat and Loreto communities, Ms Potter made clear her great love for the school and how much she looked forward to overseeing one more year.
Ms Potter has been Loreto principal the past 14 years. She arrived with the major task of bringing Loreto's years 7-8 Dawson Street and years 9-12 Mary's Mount (Sturt Street) campuses together on one site.
To bookend her time with Loreto College Ballarat, Ms Potter has been overseeing long-term plans for the school's expansion, which were made public in June.
This includes the search for a new secondary site and reintroduction of boarding to meet growing demand for Catholic girls' education in Ballarat.
Loreto put its former junior school campus, now accessible off Lyons Street North, on the market in 2017, but Ms Potter said that would not have been suitable for the expansion plans.
