The sad passing of Ken Taylor on October 16 meant the loss of one who contributed generously to Ballarat's musical life. He commenced his musical career as a chorister and a boy soprano at St Paul's in Canterbury and other church choirs. When his voice broke, he moved on to conducting. After singing with the renowned Oriana Singers, Ken formed his own choir The Kenneth Taylor Singers, which worked with the ABC, providing a chorus for its production of the Merry Widow. When his work with the ABC concluded, Ken began directing light opera and was successful with companies like the National Theatre and Birbirra Players, a Gilbert and Sullivan company. When Ken and his wife Cath moved from Melbourne in 1989, he brought with him a wealth of musical expertise. They immersed themselves in Ballarat's musical scene. Ken was asked to direct music for a production of Les Miserables and Anything Goes. Ken was also a valued chorister with the Ballarat Choral Society and occasional conductor and then president. With Cath, he was responsible for many fundraising evenings including Gilbert and Sullivan favourites HMS Pinafore and the Mikado and an operetta Topsy Turvy, written and produced by Ken and Cath. A conductor and director of the U3A choir for nine years, Ken with Cath produced and directed treats such as Trial by Jury, Edwardian Christmas and a hilarious production of Cinderella to the music of My Fair Lady. Ken was a committee member and then president of the Eureka Probus Club for many years. His generosity to Ballarat's musical heritage is deeply appreciated and he will be missed, as a person and musical contributor. Have you signed up to The Courier's variety of news emails?
