Owners of the Hop Temple on 24-28 Armstrong Street have lodged a planning application to increase the number of people that can go on the premises.
The maximum capacity under the current liquor licence is 150 patrons.
If the new planning application is granted, the Hop Temple would be able to accept 338 patrons on the site, which is within a Commercial Zone 1 in the city's CBD.
That would include up to 258 patrons on the ground floor and 80 on the mezzanine level.
The increase in the patron numbers would "allow for functions and group bookings on site", the covering letter for the planning application says.
An accompanying "cumulative impact statement" report says the increased numbers would not have an unreasonable effect on the surrounding area.
The report says noise would not likely to be a greater issue as the use of the venue will not change.
It also outlines reasons the increased number of patrons would have a positive impact on the area, estimating the total number of people in the vicinity would increase by just over 1 per cent.
The report says that consideration should be given to the fact that a range of licensed venues are clustered within the area.
It cites 17 other licensed venues within a 100-metre radius and 85 licensed businesses in total within a 500m study area of the site.
The recent planning application is not seeking to change other conditions of the liquor license nor to extend its opening hours, which run until 1am.
The venue, which is based in a re-purposed garage and stables, opened to wide acclaim in 2015, boasting one of the largest ranges of craft beer of any venue in Victoria. It had 16 beer taps running when it first started.
The Courier has approached the owner of the business for comment.
