Police have made a dramatic arrest during peak-hour traffic in the Ballarat CBD on Friday night.
Six police vehicles including heavily-armed plain clothes units from Melbourne swept on a suspect near the Creswick Road roundabout shortly after 5.30pm.
The operation included blockading the suspect's car on the southbound lanes near the Aldi car park and handcuffing him on the roadway.
Wyndham Crime Investigation Unit detectives arrested the man in relation to an alleged armed robbery in Point Cook on 7 December.
Traffic was briefly banked up past Officeworks and was diverted through the service lane near Aldi.
A 34-year-old Wendouree man was taken into custody and is being questioned by police.
The investigation is ongoing.
One CBD worker, who was just leaving work, said the incident "scared the sh*t" out of her when she saw big guns and undercover cops in the middle of the street.
