The intersection upgrades, part of the $60.8 million, Keeping Ballarat Moving program, will target six of Ballarat's most notorious traffic chokepoints and surrounding roads in order to allow the city's road network to meet the increase of cars with a quickly rising population.
Among the intersection earmarked for improvement are; replacing the existing roundabout at the intersection of Wiltshire Lane and La Trobe Street with new traffic lights, replacing the existing roundabout with new traffic lights at the intersection of Wiltshire Lane and the Glenelg Highway and replacing the existing roundabout at the intersection of the Hertford Street (Glenelg Hwy) and Albert Street (Midland Hwy) with new traffic lights.
Others also to be completed include new traffic lights at the intersection of Gregory and Gillies streets near Lake Wendouree and a new roundabout at the intersection of Dyson Drive and Ballarat-Carngham Road
The Midland Highway will be expanded from two lanes to four between Queen and Docwra streets in Sebastopol, while a new roundabout will also be built at the Docwra St intersection to improve safety.
School crossing will also be added on the Midland Highway in Sebastopol to make the trip to school safer for students walking to Magpie Primary School.
RRV regional director (western) Michael Bailey said the authority was currently in the process of coordinating timelines, with some early preparation works to begin early next year.
"We're currently in the process of finalising our construction timelines for upgrades to six of Ballarat's busiest traffic hotspots and surrounding roads," Mr Bailey said.
"Service relocation works will begin at some sites in early 2020 to ensure that those sites are ready for full-scale construction."
"We'll keep the community informed as we move closer to the start of construction."
