The scholarships have been awarded to Ballarat teens for more than 20 years to allow them to take advantage of the opportunities presented to them in the coming years.
Awarded to a male and female from each school, apart from single-sex schools, there have been almost 290 recipients since its inception. This year, 18 students received scholarships worth $2000 each during a ceremony at the Ballarat and District Trotting Club.
Academic excellence is not the only prerequisite for the award, with schools asked to nominate students based on their attitude and work ethic.
A strong work ethic was something that reclusive Ballarat business woman Dorothy Irene Ellis-Thomas valued, having made her own way in the world after dropping out of school in year 8.
She went on to do a secretarial course and made her fortune buying and selling property. With no children of her own, Ms Ellis-Thomas set up a trust before her death to benefit hard-working teens and give them some of the opportunities she did not have as an adolescent.
The 2020 recipients of the scholarships are: Ballarat Grammar students Luke Williams and Annabella Lewis, Clarendon College graduates Mansimran Loyal, Anusha Maheshwari and Olivia Putland, Loreto College's Lara Sartori, St Patrick's College student Aidan Hanrahan, Ballarat High School students Jayden Ivens and Mia-Lee Bridges, Damascus College graduates Daisy Jessup and Matthew Snibson, Phoenix College's Mitchell Collins and Tahlia Wells, Mount Rowan Secondary College's Chloe Linahan and Aiden Flynn, Woodmans Hill Secondary College students Caitlin Raabe and Broek Tinetti, and Mount Clear College's Morgan Di Domenico and Kyle Burchall.
