UPDATE, 3pm: An 83-year-old Creswick man has been charged with one count of murder and remanded in custody following an alleged assault on Christmas night in Creswick.
A 79-year-old woman died early this morning following the alleged incident on Melbourne Road before 10pm.
UPDATE, 11am: Paramedics were called to the house near the south-eastern edge of the town at 9.55pm.
Both police and ambulance reportedly arrived at around the same time.
The woman is believed to have been airlifted to hospital by helicopter shortly after midnight.
She died early on Boxing Day.
An 83-year-old man is now in police custody. Police say they were both known to each other.
Police tape had sealed the weatherboard property on the morning after the incident.
Forensic police staff with masks were seen in the front room of the house, which lies on the edge of Creswick, a short distance from the Wallaby Track and St George's Lake.
The Courier asked to speak to the neighbours who first intervened but they did not wish to comment.
Another neighbour, who did not wish to be named, described it as a "pretty sh**ty end to Christmas."
Local residents said the man and the woman who lived at the address had moved to the area a few years ago.
They were described as a "lovely, active" couple.
They reportedly went ballroom dancing every Saturday night and were often seen out in the area.
Nearby resident Des O'Brien said: "I was stunned, absolutely stunned. It's a terrible tragedy. [It's really tough] to see that, especially on Christmas night."
Kevin Abbott, who lives on the same road, described them as "a lovely couple". "They liked to walk their dog, they walk around, they keep active.
"It's quite a shock really. They were quite pleasant, quite friendly."
He said the man who lived at the address was "quite a joker", while the woman who died was "more closed as a person, but still friendly and smiling".
"She appeared to be a lovely lady."
While police investigations were taking place behind the lace curtains of the house, a young man and a young woman emerged from a neighbouring address with two freshly cut bunches of flowers.
They laid them at the foot of a large oak tree outside of the address.

Homicide detectives are investigating after the woman died this morning from her injuries which were sustained on Christmas night.
Emergency services were called to the Melbourne Road address just before 10pm and she was found with life-threatening injuries.
The woman was airlifted to hospital but has since died.
